Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
What is window film?
Window film is a thin, multi-layered polyester material that incorporates the many different layers to control different properties, including Ultra-Violet (UV) light, heat, glare, and privacy.
Window film comes in a variety of performance levels and shades.
What are the benefits of window film?
The many benefits of window film include eye comfort, UV protection, aesthetics, and
increased safety, privacy, and energy savings.
What do the different % of visible light transmission mean?
Film percentages stand for light transmission, or the amount of light that is allowed through the film. The lower the percentage, the darker the film.
What should I use to clean my windows after I've had them tinted?
After window film installation, wait a week before cleaning the inside of the window where the film was installed. After a week, use a window cleaner without ammonia and a soft cloth or rubber squeegee. We recommend foam cleaners because they do not streak, and are usually ammonia-free. Never scrape the film with any type of blade or clean your tinted windows with anything abrasive, as it will scratch the film.
If my window film is damaged, can it be fixed?
Damaged window film cannot be repaired, but the damaged piece of film can be
removed and the glass can be retinted.
Can window film reduce glare?
Yes. Glare can cause eye fatigue, and can also be dangerous when driving. It reduces the amount of light allowed through the film, therefore allowing you to see better and not stress your eyes.
What are Medical risks of exposure to UV rays?
UV rays contain two types that impact humans. These include UV - A and UV - B . Continued exposure to these UV rays can result in eye damage. UV - A impacts your central vision. Over time, you can develop damage to the macula. The macula lies in the back of your eye on the retina. UV - B can damage the front of your eye. This part of the eye contains the cornea and lens. When they absorb UV - B rays, the eye can become more damaged than from exposure to UV - A rays. Examples of eye damage resulting from UV ray exposure include: Macular Degeneration which is a leading cause of decreased vision and blindness in older Americans Cataracts develop from prolonged exposure to UV - B rays. This manifests as a clouding of the lens in the eye. This makes it difficult to focus light and impairs vision. Pterygium is a growth on the eye cause d by UV ray exposure. The growth starts on the white part of the eye and may spread to the cornea. Over time, this growth can block your vision. Skin Cancer is a well - known risk of exposure to UV rays. This cancer can develop on the eyelids from looking in to the sunlight. Corneal Sunburn , also called photo keratitis , can occur after short - term, high - level exposure to UV - B rays. This often occurs following long hours at the beach or on the snow without proper eye protection. Extensive driving without eye protection may also cause corneal damage. This condition is often very painful and can result in temporary vision loss.
What questions should I ask a window tinting professional?
So you’re looking to get your windows tinted but know nothing about window tint. Below are the most common questions tinting pros get asked: Do you offer a lifetime warranty? (This is a big one and can set a shop apart from another, even if
it’s just a little more in pricing). Do you have insurance? What happens if damage occurs to the vehicle while in your care

? What types of window films do you recommend for me and why?
How long will it take to install window tint? What steps I should take before and after installation?
Automotive Tint
Is the tint applied to the outside of the windows?
No. In most cases, window film is installed on the inside of the glass. This allows for maximum durability. On vehicles, the window tint is hand-cut on the outside of the glass, then
installed on the interior of the glass.
I just had my windows tinted, why do they look so hazy?
The moisture that remains between the film and the glass after installation can cause a hazy, streaky, blotchy appearance. It takes several days for the adhesive/film to completely cure. The remaining moisture will evaporate through the film; depending on the type of film, this process may take a couple of days, or even a couple of months.
When the water evaporates completely, your windows should have excellent clarity.
What causes window film to turn purple?
The window film used by Mountain Life Window Tinting has the technology to make film color stable, thus carrying a lifetime warranty that guarantees no color change. This means that our window films do not turn purple like the cheap films sold in other shops or auto parts stores.
Please see our Lifetime Limited Warranty for more information.
How long does it take to tint my vehicle?
The amount of time varies, depending on your type of vehicle. A complete car can take 2 to 4 hours. Full-sized trucks generally take between an hour and an hour and a half. A set of front doors usually only takes 30-45 minutes. If old aftermarket film has to be removed, that can add anywhere from 30 minutes to half a day.
Do I need to wait before putting my windows down?
We recommend that you leave your vehicle windows rolled up for at least 24 hours after window film has been installed. This allows the film to cure and adhere to the glass before the window is moved.
Can window film be matched to my vehicle's factory tint?
In most cases yes, depending on how old the film is and whether or not a color stable film was used.
Does old, aftermarket window film need to be removed before installing new tint?
Old film will need to be removed before installing new window film. It is always best to have the old film removed by a professional, as the rear defroster can be easily damaged. The process does add 2 – 4 hours of labor, and there is a charge for the removal. We recommend dropping your vehicle in the morning and let us call you when the job is completed.
Can aftermarket window film be installed over factory window tint?
As long as it is factory window tint, which is a color in the glass, then after market window film can be installed directly on the glass. Aftermarket window film has many more solar benefits than factory window tint. Aftermarket window film rejects 99% of ultraviolet rays and between 35%-60% of heat, depending on the film level used. Plus, adding aftermarket tint over factory tint can give you more privacy for storing personal items in the back of a vehicle.
Will the window film affect my rear defroster, or will the heat from the defroster affect the film?
No, window film nor the car’s rear defroster will be affected.
Do I have to come to your location to have my vehicle tinted?
Yes. MLWT only installs window film on vehicles inside our clean, air-conditioned facility. This way we have complete control over the environment we install window film in. This is how you receive the most quality job.
Can the front two doors be matched to the vehicle factory window tint?
Yes. However, having this level of window film on front doors is not legal in Missouri. Vehicle factory window tint is usually 26%-15% film level. Missouri law states that the front door legal light transmission is 35%, which is lighter than the rear window of your factory tinted vehicle.
Can I darken my vehicle's factory window tint?
Yes. As long as it is factory window tint, we can install window film directly on the glass. Factory window tint’s color is actually a pigment in the glass. Aftermarket window film also has many more solar benefits than factory window tint. Factory tint only rejects part of the UV rays, and only rejects a small amount of heat. Aftermarket window film rejects 99% of ultraviolet rays and between 35%-60% of heat, depending on the film level used. In addition to these benefits, darkening factory tinted glass will give you more privacy for storing your personal items in the back of the vehicle.
Commercial & Residential
Does window film prevent glass from breaking?
No, window film does not prevent glass from breaking. Window film does increase the safety of the glass; due to a very aggressive adhesive, the film helps to hold the pieces of broken glass together. In the event the glass breaks, due to an auto accident, a person running into it, or an attempted break-in, the glass will shatter, but in most instances, the film will help keep the glass together.
Can window film increase safety and security?
Yes, window film adds a degree of shatter resistance to the glass areas of your home, building, or vehicle. These films bond to glass and help hold dangerous glass fragments in place, should breakage occur due to accident, natural disaster, or illegal entry.
Does blocking UV rays help to prevent fading & deterioration?
Yes. The same sun that brightens a room’s interior can be detrimental to fabrics, furnishings, artwork, and rugs. Ultraviolet rays are the main cause of both fade and deterioration. Window films can screen out 99% of the damaging UV rays that can fade richly colored furniture, tapestries, and artwork. Heat and light also play a part in fading, but using window film to block nearly 100% of UV rays will increase the life of your personal property for years.
Can window film increase my privacy?
Yes. Window films give a clear view to the outside. Depending on the degree of privacy desired, you can select films that prevent others from looking in during the daytime.
How does window film improve year-round comfort?
Window film creates a more comfortable environment through consistent climate control by eliminating “cold wall” and “hot wall” problems. Rooms stay more comfortable in the summer and winter, be reducing “hot spots”, no matter where the sun is shining.
How does window film lower energy costs?
In summer, window film reflects the hot sun, reducing heat gain and lowering air conditioning costs. In winter, window film retains heat — up to 15% — to reduce heating costs. This year-after-year reduction in energy costs can yield an impressive return on investment.
What is "one-way" film?
“One-way film” is based on lighting, not the film itself. The side that is the brightest is the side that you can see. During the day when it is bright outside, you can see outside. At night, if you have lights on inside and no lighting outside, then it reverses.
Can window film be applied to any surface?
No. The adhesive is meant to adhere to glass only. Window film should only be applied to glass surfaces that have a smooth finish. Plastics, Plexiglas, or Lexan contain too much oil for the film to adhere properly for a long period of time.
Can dual pane windows be tinted?
Dual pane or thermal pane have two pieces of glass about ½” apart with an inert gas sealed in - between. The answer is yes! Your dual pane windows can be tinted, but certain guidelines must be maintained because dual panes are more vulnerable to stress than single pane windows. Your sales consultant from Mountain Life Window tinting has several decades of experience in tinting dual pane glass and can expertly make recommendations.
What is seal failure?
Seal failure occurs when the sealant between the two panes of glass breaks, subjecting the airspace to the surrounding environment. Since the sealant acts as a moisture barrier, if the seal breaks, condensation will develop in the airspace of the window, giving a cloudy appearance.
Does window film cause seal failure?
Window films have never been shown to be the cause of seal failure, but window film manufacturer guidelines should be followed. Window manufacturers continuously analyze how window films affect temperature and pressure with the airspace of an insulating glass unit. Results indicate that on a clear insulating unit, even our most popular residential film, 15% Dual Reflective, only increases the summertime airspace temperature by no more than 22 degrees, a pressure increase of only .55 psi. Put into perspective, most manufacturers of insulating glass, design their products to withstand a pressure change of 3.30 psi, over six times the film’s potential pressure increase.
Do you offer a Seal Failure Warranty?
Yes. SunTek Window Films manufactured by Eastman Performance Films provide up to 36 months of seal failure warranty, provided that there is an active window manufacturer’s warranty in effect. The term of the seal failure warranty will not exceed the window manufacturers term of coverage.
Why do Commercial and Residential customers have film applied to their windows?
Most residential customers will purchase window films to reduce heat and glare, as well as helping
to protect belongings from fade
due to damaging UV
-
A and UV
-
B rays: all while maintaining the view
outside. Most often Commercial customers will purchase window films for tenant comfort, and in the
case of storefronts with displays, protection for damaging UV rays.
They can further justify the
purchase on Energy Cost Savings
What is the typical Return on Investment for Window Films?
ROI can vary depending upon the amount of sunlit glass exposure, the type of film, the type of glass, cost of fuel, cost of application, and other variables. However, historically we have seen returns on investment often range in the 2 – 5 year period, with some reported to be even less than 6 months.
Will window films stop my furnishing from fading?
Nothing stops fading. SunTek films are de signed to reduce the major causes of fading, (ultraviolet light, visible light, and solar heat), thus prolonging the life of your furnishings, perhaps as two to five times. As a general rule of thumb, Ultraviolet (UV) is approximately 40% of the cause, visible light is about 25%, and heat about 25%. The remaining 10% can be attributed to humidity, pollutants, interior lights, dye fastness, etc.
Can I eliminate annoying glare so I can watch TV?
SunTek window films can eliminate up to 80% of annoying glare, while maintaining the view out.
Is window film installation expensive?
The average installation cost of window film is much less than other window treatments, that only
shade. The investment
in window film will return dividends in the form of reduced air conditioning,
fade reduction, increased comfort, and, unlike other treatments that have to be closed just to
get an
effect of shading, you will maintain the view out
Will window film kill my plants?
In most cases, if a houseplant is already receiving adequate light, the use of window film will not harm it. New growth MAY be retarded, and for a FEW days, a plant may go through an acclimation period while it adjusts to the light change. If a p articular plant normally wilts by the end of a sunny day, it will actually thrive better with the film installed.
