A Quick History

Aftermarket window tinting has been around since the 1940’s. Mainly used in commercial applications, a liquid tint or “flow coat” as it was sometimes called was used back then. While these coatings were effective at reducing ultra violet fading and harsh glare, true heat control did not come about until vapor coated, metalized , films by Hysil, DuPont and 3M w ere introduced in 1968 and 1969. These films w ere a development accredited as a byproduct of NASA’s Apollo Lunar Program. DuPont won the competition for NASA and its Mylar was wrapped around the bottom portion of the Lunar Landing Module that is still on the moon, to protect the metal structure underneath from melting under the extreme effects of solar exposure that it experiences. This was introduced in 1969 as a window film, licensed as DuPont Mylar, manufactured by Sun - X International of Houston, TX.

Through the 1970’s and 1980’ t he materials and adhesives began to be mod ified, upgraded, and changed to the Polyester Films with Carbon, Nano - Hybrid, Ceramic , Dual Reflective, Safety and Sputtered coated film s of today , where you have specific materials designed to work in specialized applications, and to provide differing performance in three main applications.
